NewJeans Responds to Legal Action Filed by ADAA Over Contract Termination
K-pop sensation NewJeans has released a detailed statement refuting claims made by their former agency, ADAA,
regarding the termination of their exclusive contracts.
The statement comes amidst a legal battle initiated by ADAA, which filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court on December 3 to validate the contracts.
The conflict traces back to November 29, 2024, when NewJeans members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein announced the termination of their contracts, citing ADAA’s alleged breach of contractual obligations and failure to rectify the situation despite a 14-day grace period.
In their statement, NewJeans clarified the circumstances leading to their decision. “Our trust in ADAA and its partner HYBE has completely collapsed. The agency has repeatedly violated its contractual duties to protect us as artists and instead engaged in actions that slandered and devalued us,” the group asserted. They emphasized that their decision was in full compliance with the contract terms, which allow termination in case of a breach.
Allegations of Mismanagement and Harassment
The group also highlighted incidents of alleged harassment directed at their staff after the announcement. “Our managers and producers faced intimidation, including having their laptops confiscated by ADAA and HYBE. This behavior is deeply concerning and unacceptable,” the members stated.
They accused ADAA of misleading the public through a statement suggesting the contracts remain valid. “We regret that ADAA’s actions have created public confusion. We reaffirm that we are no longer affiliated with them as of November 29, 2024,” NewJeans declared.
Looking Ahead
Despite the legal and emotional challenges, NewJeans expressed their commitment to their fans. “Though the road ahead may be difficult, we dream of continuing to share music with those who love us. We hope the trial will uncover the truth behind ADAA’s breach of contract and vindicate our decision,” they said.
The group also called out the lack of accountability from ADAA, even following a change in management. They claimed the agency failed to rectify internal issues that harmed the artists and tarnished its reputation.
As NewJeans prepares to face the legal proceedings, their united front remains evident. “No matter the circumstances, the five of us stand together, and nothing can separate us. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our fans and ask for your continued encouragement as we move forward,” the statement concluded.
The court’s decision on the matter is expected to set a significant precedent in artist-agency contractual disputes within the K-pop industry.
